Things to Do While Biblical Fasting

  1. Pray

    • Dedicate specific times during the day to seek God through prayer. This is an opportunity to pour out your heart, intercede for others, and ask for divine guidance. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

  2. Read the Word

    • Immerse yourself in the Bible, focusing on scriptures that encourage spiritual growth and align with the purpose of your fast. Let the Word of God provide strength and direction. (Joshua 1:8)

  3. Meditate on the Goodness of God

    • Take moments of stillness to reflect on God’s faithfulness, mercy, and blessings. Consider keeping a journal to write down what comes to mind during these moments of gratitude. (Psalm 77:12)

  4. Read the Bible

    • Explore passages that resonate with your heart or provide insight into areas of your life that need transformation. Consider using study tools or devotionals to deepen your understanding. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

  5. Engage in Godly Conversations

    • Connect with fellow believers to discuss scripture, share testimonies, and encourage one another. These conversations can uplift your spirit and help you stay focused on your spiritual journey. (Colossians 4:6)

  6. Worship and Praise

    • Play worship music or sing hymns to exalt God’s name. Worship shifts your focus to His greatness and brings peace to your spirit. (Psalm 100:2)

  7. Serve Others

    • Look for opportunities to help those in need during your fast. Acts of service, no matter how small, reflect God’s love and keep your heart aligned with His purpose. (Matthew 25:35-40)

  8. Examine Your Heart

    • Use this time to reflect on areas of your life that need repentance or healing. Ask God to reveal anything that may hinder your relationship with Him. (Psalm 139:23-24)

Things to Refrain From While Biblical Fasting

  1. Television

    • Limit or avoid watching TV to minimize distractions and create more time for prayer and meditation. Instead, focus on uplifting content if you need background noise. (Psalm 101:3)

  2. Social Media

    • Disconnect from social platforms that might lead to comparison, negativity, or unnecessary distractions. Replace scrolling with scripture reading or journaling. (Matthew 6:6)

  3. Negative Company and Conversations

    • Avoid individuals or discussions that lead to gossip, complaining, or discouragement. Surround yourself with people who inspire faith and positivity. (1 Corinthians 15:33)

  4. Unnecessary Activities

    • Refrain from overloading your schedule with tasks that don’t align with the purpose of your fast. Simplify your day to prioritize spiritual focus. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

  5. Overindulgence in Non-Food Pleasures

    • Fasting is not only about refraining from food but also from anything that takes God’s place in your heart. Avoid overindulging in entertainment or other habits. (Isaiah 58:6-7)

  6. Complaining or Negativity

    • Keep a positive attitude and guard your words during your fast. Complaining undermines the spiritual benefits of fasting. (Philippians 2:14)

  7. Idle Time

    • Avoid wasting time doing nothing. Use every moment intentionally, whether in prayer, worship, or quiet reflection. (Ephesians 5:15-16)

Practical Tips for Fasting

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to maintain your health and energy levels during a food fast.

  • Prepare Spiritually: Begin your fast with prayer, asking God to sustain you and reveal His will.

  • Set Goals: Define the purpose of your fast, whether it’s for breakthrough, guidance, or intimacy with God.

  • Journal Your Experience: Write down your prayers, reflections, and any revelations you receive during the fast.

  • Break the Fast Wisely: Reintroduce food gradually after a prolonged fast to avoid physical discomfort.

Post-Fast Recommendations:

  1. Break the Fast Gradually:

    • Start with easily digestible foods like bone broth, smoothies, or steamed vegetables to avoid overwhelming the digestive system.

  2. Hydration and Electrolytes:

    • Replenish with mineral-rich foods and beverages to restore balance. I use LIQUID IV electrolytes.

  3. Probiotic-Rich Foods:

    • Introduce fermented foods (e.g., yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut) to support microbiome health.

How To Eat Post-Fast

  1. Start Light:

    • Bone broth or vegetable broth

    • Smoothies (low in sugar, with almond milk, spinach, and a bit of fruit)

    • Steamed or lightly sautéed vegetables (e.g., zucchini, carrots)

  2. Transition Foods:

    • Soft proteins like scrambled eggs or poached chicken

    • Simple soups (chicken and vegetables without cream or heavy carbs)
